How to Style an Extra Long Halter Dress: 3 Ways to Wear It

Silk camisoles are one of those “fashion essentials” you see on your wardrobe list. While I don’t think these are a hard and fast template for building a wardrobe from scratch, I can’t deny that for me personally, they are a big yes (for you, it may be a different cut) different fabric, or no skirt at all). Combined with the 90s minimalist trend, hem lengths have dropped in favour of longer skirts. Slim and lean silhouettes. So today we’re going to discuss three ways to style an extra-long halter dress.

This is a great starting point if you’re planning to add a new style to your wardrobe. Ignore it if you can’t decide on a combination of three different outfits that you actually wear.

1.Wear with texture and shape

Use this type of outfit combination to create visual interest and dimension. Halter dresses tend to have this long and skinny element to them, so you can play with that or choose to create friction by using interesting proportions. This outfit is the latter. You can’t see it in this picture, but the top has a slight drawstring/bubble sleeve and a loose fit. Though the jacket does do all the heavy lifting. It’s made from a plush tweed fabric, which combined with the oversized style balances out the exaggerated length of the skirt.

You can also use accessories to enhance the tactical quality of the look. My bag is faux crocodile, but you can wear a big furry scarf. Also, it looks a bit like I’m wearing ‘colour’ here, which in some ways I am. If you’re having trouble matching colours in an outfit, look for similar colours (e.g. brown and light brown, charcoal and black) as it will create variation while maintaining cohesion.

2.Wear with colour blocking

Something I talk about a lot is thinking about adding visual elements to your outfits. This is why certain hem lengths may not work with certain shoes. Or why outfits don’t work despite using all the other techniques and usual styles of uniforms. Matching the colour of the shoes to the colour of the skirt helps to continue the clean lines and creates the illusion of added length – you can show a little bit of skin, but the effect is magnified when wearing boots or socks and shoes in the same colour as the skirt. Keep it on the lower half of your body as the eye stretches all the way down to your toes.

3.Matching popular colours

The first outfit combination is based on neutrals/tones and uses accessories to add character and vibrancy. I’ve used a pair of red shoes here to create a fun pop of colour, which I can also enhance by adding a matching bag. Bright accents are a great way to breathe new life into your favourite style staples. My favourite chocolate brown pairings are lemon yellow, soft pink, burnt orange and emerald green. But obviously what you like depends on the colour of your dress.

Another tip for making things interesting is to consider your t-shirt. Mine has a rich earthy reddish-brown print that combines the colours of the skirt and shoes.
